“白塔寺药店”位于北京市西城文保区，毗邻阜成门内的“妙应寺白塔”而得其名。其前身为旧北平的“齐卉堂”和“大和堂”,是迄今己有130余年历史的传统百年老店。在二十世纪七十年代末，由于历史原因在原址上翻盖现代风格大楼,地下一层、地上五层，建筑主体檐口高18.1米，遮挡了“妙应寺白塔”，在客观上影响了环境景观；而且药店的建筑外观也因历经风雨而年久失修。随着北京市的飞速发展,人们对尊重历史文化也有了更高的要求；因此“白塔寺药店”大楼遮挡“妙应寺白塔”的矛盾日趋凸显。历届北京市、区各级相关领导、专家等统筹大局，提出“降层亮塔”的改造预想，并为之做了充分的准备工作。“白塔寺药店”于2012年开始翻新改造，按照政府的要求尽量恢复其原貌，并且不影响其功能和使用。历经各相关单位的共同努力，终于在2013年得以实施建成，并成为北京市西城区当年的重点项目。

‘Baita Temple Pharmacy’ is located in Wenbao District, Xicheng, Beijing and gets its name as it is adjacent to ‘Miaoying Temple White Pagoda’ in Chengmen. ‘Qi Hui Tang’ and ‘Da He Tang’ in old Beiping, its former body, are traditional century-old stores with a history of over 130 years. Due to historic reasons, modern-style buildings are renovated in the original site in the late 1970s. The 18.1-meter-tall main body cornice with one underground floor and five aboveground floors block ‘Miao Ying Temple White Pagoda’ and would objectively cast an impact on the environment. The building of the pharmacy is in bad repair after years-long wind and rain. With speedy development in Beijing, people have higher requirements on respect towards history and culture, so the clashes on ‘Baita Temple Pharmacy’, ‘hindrance of building’ and ‘Miao Ying Temple White Pagoda’ are enhanced. With coordination of the layout by related leaders and specialists of all levels in Beijing and the District, the preconception of ‘lighting up the pagoda by lowering the floors’ is presented with ample preparation being done. ‘Bata Temple Pharmacy’ was renovated in 2012. Following governmental requirements, it aimed at restoring its original look without affecting its functions and use. With concerted efforts of related units, it was up and running in 2013 and became a key project in Xicheng District of Beijing.
